Newton YMCA investing in kids, health, neighbors

The Newton YMCA is a cause-driven organization that is for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. That’s because a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. To that end, the Newton YMCA continues to invest financial and time resources into renovation projects and new equipment.

On the heels of numerous restoration projects made in 2015, the Y continues to move progressively forward in keeping our infrastructure, programs and services at the highest level. With a facility now 40 years old it is more important than ever we are good stewards of our financial gifts and endowments to ensure Y experiences are enjoyed by future generations to come.

A recent upgrade made at the Y included more than 50 new pieces of cardio and strength conditioning equipment. The new equipment from Cybex and Precor is precision made to ensure the user the ultimate experience and benefit in muscle core and fitness conditioning.

Other new equipment installed at the Y includes new drinking fountains which offer bottle filling capability, additional changing stations and swim suit spinners in both adult locker rooms. The bottle filling fountains makes it much easier for members to stay hydrated while eliminating wasteful plastic bottles. The convenience of changing stations in both adult locker rooms makes the Y truly a family experience, while the swim suit spinners help eliminate extra water on the floors and for members to carry a much dryer swim suit in their workout bag.

In the months to come will be large scale projects such as the complete upgrade in our HVAC and control system, conversion of all exterior and interior lighting to energy efficient LED, and renovation of our lobby restrooms. Consideration is being given to the future renovation of the entire aquatic area including new pool and deck tiling, sound insulation system, new timing board, and fresh paint.

To accomplish these type of improvements the Y needs generous donors such as Brad and Mary Manatt. This past December the Y was blessed by a caring gift of $5 million from the Manatts. Their gift along with other caring donations will be used solely for capital and infrastructure projects as well as provide sustainability for future generations.
