Breckenridge has different approach

The primary on June 7 isn’t about division in the HD29 Democratic Party. It’s about a slightly different approach. For the most part, Rep. Kelley votes progressively. He is a wonderful orator and carries a great public speaking presence. He isn’t afraid to be firm and stand firm with the opposition.

However, he’s become distant from the constituents and only seems present when he feels he has to be (not responding to NDN questionnaire, for example). Some of his behaviors have distanced himself from members of his own party. And if his own party is annoyed, it isn’t surprising that the GOP majority doesn’t work well with him. Challenger Patrick Peyton isn’t wrong when he says that in order for our concerns to be heard, the major party must work with the representative. I think a Democrat can still do that.

Wes Breckenridge doesn’t have the same loud presence as Kelley, but he exudes a quiet confidence all the same. Unlike other Iowa precincts, he led Newton 1-1 to a very smooth and uneventful caucus. He has an honest and upfront approach and you will always know where you and he stand. There are times we need bluster and someone who can play the political game. Kelley can do that. Then there are times you need a quieter person who will truly listen and make you feel heard. Wes does that. I believe he will stick to his values, represent HD29 AND be able to talk (hopefully work) across the aisle.

I emailed Wes a question, and he answered, and then requested to meet me. He didn’t know me; I was a faceless email, but he came to my home, and we discussed issues for 90 minutes. At the time, I was planning on voting for Kelley, but Wes won me over. If you haven’t met Wes, call or email him. He genuinely cares to hear what you think. When he isn’t sure about something he will go to experts. He talks to workers, teachers and doctors to get their expert opinions. Wes is an honest, upfront man and a “quiet” leader. He is genuine and is a great choice to represent HD29. I encourage you to vote for him on June 7. And then, I encourage you to get out and vote in November, whichever candidate wins in June. Don’t let the primary divide us.
