CMB girls bring back title trophy

PCM girls lock down eight auto bids

VAN METER — Backed by a pair of wins from two of its senior leaders, the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls’ track team claimed a Class 2A district championship here Thursday night.

The Raiders punched seven automatic bids into next week’s state track and field meet and scored 123 points to win the title.

Prairie City-Monroe, which won two events, pushed through eight automatic bids and

finished third with 108 points.

Madrid had 114 1/5 points in second.

The top two finishers each in 2A event earn automatic bids into the state meet.

The next best eight times or distances from around the state also lock up state bids.

For CMB, Toni Spencer won the long jump with a career-best leap of 17 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Payge Jurgens collected a gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 34-9 1/2.

The third victory for the Raiders came in the sprint medley relay. The foursome of Megan Ritter, Shasta Moody, Spencer and Bridget Hurley won with a time of 1 minute, 55.63 seconds. That edged the Mustangs, whose team of Morgan Uhlenhopp, Ashley Miller, Emily Hugen and Rachel Stafford finished in 1:55.65. Both are headed to the state meet.

The other state qualifiers for CMB includes Brianda Bane in the 400-meter hurdles, Hurley in the 400, Heather Jessen in the 3,000 and the 4x100 relay team of Sailor Hinegardner, Spencer, Hurley and Bane.

PCM’s state qualifiers included Ashley Van Gorp in the long jump, Jayci Vos in the 400 hurdles, Stafford in the 800 and the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relay teams all clinched state berths.

Bane finished behind Vos in the 400 hurdles. Vos won the event with a season-best time of 1:06.12. Bane crossed in 1:12.14, which was .04 seconds ahead of teammate Josie Wierson. Wierson finished third.

Hurley’s runner-up time in the 400 was 1:02.70, while Jessen was second in the 3,000 with a time of 11:56.69. Brenna Thomson was third in the 3,000, while Hinegardner finished thid in the 100 hurdles.

The 4x100 relay team of Hinegardner, Spencer, Hurley and Bane was second in 51.45. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Gracie Cheville, Sydney Ziesman, Mary Schabilion and Hinegardner finished third in 1:12.27.

The distance medley relay team finished in the top spot. That team included Vos, Hugen, Van Gorp and Stafford finished in 4:24.38.

Van Gorp was the runner-up to Spencer in the long jump, but she leaped to a personal-best 17-0 1/2. Stafford was second in the 800 in 2:24.97.

Other individual top-three finishes included Kiara Kappelman in the discus and Kirstin Ives in the 1, 500. Kappelman was marked at 104-11, while Ives finished her 1,500 in 5:26.99.

Van Gorp and Vos will both run at the state meet in the 4x200 and 4x400. The 4x200 included Vos, Hugen, Ashley Miller and Van Gorp, and they finished in 1:50.90. The 4x400 team featured Vos, Tatum Nearmyer, Van Gorp and Stafford.

The 4x800 relay finished second, too. That team included Payton Schut, Baylee Smith, Morgan Novak and Kirstin Ives.

CMB’s Stover clinches state berth in 400 hurdles

The CMB and PCM boys faced a tough field at its state qualifier on Thursday.

The result of that is just one automatic state qualifier between the two schools.

CMB’s Brady Stover locked up his first-ever state berth in the 400. He was seccond with a time of 56.17. Stover finished fourth in the 100 in 11.63.

The Raiders and Mustangs collected a combined five third-place finishes.

For CMB, Will Clapper was third in the shot put, and the shuttle hurdle relay team also grabbed the bronze.

Clapper’s best throw was 47-11 1/2. Brady Kemp was fourth with a toss of 47-6 1/2.

The Raiders’ shuttle hurdle relay team finished third. The team of Ben Gunderson, Lane Howes, Brad Ritter and Stover crossed the line in 1:02.35.

PCM’s top individual finisher came from Noah Clark, who took third in the discus with a throw of 141-4.

The 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams also finished third. The foursome of Luke Greiner, Noah Anderson, Tyler Dredge and Preston Van Wyk were on both teams.

Madrid won the boys district title by 44 points. The Tigers had 125 points, while Woodward Academy finished second with 81. CMB was sixth with 59 points and PCM finished eighth with 37 points.
