Newton boys defeat PCM

MONROE — Newton High’s Cardinal boys put up a wall against host Prairie-City Monroe’s Mustangs on the PCM soccer field Thursday. The Cardinals claimed their 10th win of the season, beating the Mustangs 7-1.

The Cardinals pushed out to a 3-0 lead by halftime on back-to-back goals from Zach Combs and one from Nick Rusk. Rusk nailed his second goal of the game with 33 minutes left in the second half.

Chet Adams followed suit five minutes later to push Newton’s lead to 5-0. Tyler Stanton’s header off a pass from Josh Gulling made it 6-0.

Prairie City-Monroe averted being shutout when Ryan Kohlhof scored with 18 minutes remaining in the game. Newton’s Jacob Murphy added a goal at the seven-minute mark for the final margin.

Newton’s Griffin Engel was in goal the entire game. He made five saves.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 8-1, to improve to 9-5-1. The Cardinals led the Mustang JV, 4-0 at halftime on two goals by Stanton and one each from Logan Heisdorffer and Bradley Portner. Portner and Murphy each had an assist.

In the second half, Jacob Knoll, Ty Arguello, Darren Corso and Chase Dykstra scored goal for Newton. Matthew Moran and Adam Maharry each had an assist. Maharry was credited with two goalie saves.
