PCM’s Maher wins Knoxville tourney

KNOXVILLE — Due to band and chorus obligations and sickness, the Prairie City-Monroe girls golf team had just two golfers at the Knoxville Invitational on Saturday.

One of those golfers had the best score in the field.

Junior Breanna Maher shot a 1-over-par 38 to win medalist honors at the par 37 at Pine Knolls Country Club. She was five shots better than Pella’s Camille Henry, who was the runner-up medalist.

The tournament was shortened to nine holes because of weather.

The only other golfer for the Mustangs was sophomore Ellie Steenhoek, who shot a 62.

“The girls are ready for a break after four straight days of meets,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “I am very proud of these girls for their perseverance with such a tough schedule.

“Breanna’s hard work is paying off for her, and I hope it continues for the rest of the season.”

Maher’s round of 38 is a new nine-hole school record at PCM. Maher had the previous record of 39.

Pella won the team title with a 187, while Grinnell shot a 220, Knoxville carded a 222 and Oskaloosa finished with a 255.

The Mustangs play an 18-hole round at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chariton.

Mustangs finish sixth at Moravia tournament

MORAVIA — Playing with only four golfers, the Mustangs finished sixth out of 10 teams at the Preserve at Rathbun Lake on Thursday.

Maher finished in a tie for fifth with a 91, while sophomore Madeline Mitchell was ninth with a 93.

The Mustangs finished with a 442, which was two shots off Davis County for fifth. Pleasantville won the tourney with a 375, while Centerville shot a 390, Chariton carded a 392 and Mount Ayr finished with a 407 to complete the top five.

“This meet always has very tough competition,” Edwards said. “I was excited to see some of the girls in the top 10.”

PCM was better than host Moravia (446), Clarke (446), Central Decatur (497) and Wayne (545).

Three regular varsity starters were absent because the PCM band played in the Tulip Time parade.

Steenhoek shot a 114 and Lexi Reed played in her first varsity meet of the year and shot a 144.
