Tigerhawk girls finish third in Tulip Time Relays

PELLA — Strong finishes in the field events gave the Colfax-Mingo girls track team some early points, and the Tigerhawks finished third overall in the small-school division at the Tulip Time Relays Thursday.

Colfax-Mingo went 1-2 in the shot put, 1-3 in the discus and also collected silver medals in the high jump and long jump. That’s where the Tigerhawks got a bulk of their 111 points.

Lynnville-Sully won the meet with 142, while Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (141) was one point back in second.

The Tigerhawks (111) were well ahead of North Mahaska (88), while Pella Christian (47) and Twin Cedars (32) also participated.

Sophomore Rhiannon Haley had the team’s two wins. She won the discus and shot put. Haley’s winning throw in the shot put covered 32 feet, 6 1/2 inches, while her best toss in the discus was 93-4.

Junior Amy Russell gave C-M the 1-2 finish in the shot put. Her silver-medal throw was marked at 32-4 1/2.

Junior Alivia Haley was third in the discus with a toss of 82-4.

The other two medal performances in the field events came from sophomore Ries Wilson in the high jump and junior Aranda Woods in the long jump. Wilson was second with a personal-best leap of 4-10, while Woods was the runner-up with a jump of 14-10 1/2.

On the track, the distance medley relay was second. That foursome included Russell, Woods, Wilson and freshman Ilia Hostetter, and they finished in 5 minutes, 5.61 seconds.

Ilia Hostetter replaced her sister, junior Dakota Hostetter, who normally anchors the medley.

Dakota Hostetter went home sick from school Thursday.

The 4x400 relay claimed the bronze medal. The foursome of Wilson, Courtney Burdess, Megan Earles and Colleen Craig stopped the clock at 4:45.51.

Other third-place finishes included Craig in the 400, Burdess in the 800 and Danielle Decker and Ilia Hostetter finished 3-4 in the 1,500.

The Tigerhawks run in their first South Iowa Cedar League outdoor meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Brooklyn.
