Mitchell leads Mustangs to runner-up at home tourney

MONROE — Three top-10 finishes helped the Prairie City-Monroe girls golf team take second in its host tournament at Gateway Recreation Golf Course on Thursday.

Sophomore Madeline Mitchell led the Mustangs for the first time this season, while juniors Breanna Maher and Courtney Bridges also finished in the top six positions.

Gilbert won the team title with a 410. The Tigers had the top two individual finishers, too. Katie Jenkins won medalist honors with a 94, while Morgan Gustafson was the runner-up with a 100.

Mitchell shot a 100, too, but was third on a cardback. Maher finished fourth with a 101, and Bridges tied for fifth with a 106. PCM’s final counting score was sophomore Sabrina Reed’s 119.

“The girls did pretty well despite having to finish the last few holes in the rain,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “We had very good competition for our meet, and everything went really well.”

The Mustangs shot a 426 in second place. South Hamilton was third with a 380, while Bondurant-Farrar (489), Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (495) and Des Moines Christian (504) also had complete teams. Albia sent two golfers but could not factor into the team score.

Mitchell had four pars on her round. Three of those four pars came on consecutive holes (No. 15, 16, 17). Maher’s round included a birdie on the par 5 No. 13.

Bridges had two pars. The first one came on the par 4 No. 9. She saved par when she buried a 36-foot putt from the edge of the green.

Sophomore Ellie Steenhoek shot a 120 for PCM, while senior Abby Van Haaften carded a 123.

The Mustangs compete in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Boone. The tournament will be played at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.
