Newton’s Revell strikes gold in shot put ring

GRINNELL — Sophomore Haley Revell is leading a young group of throwers for Newton High’s Cardinal girls’ track team. Revell claimed a gold medal in the shot put event at the 2016 Grinnell Girls Tiger Relays Tuesday.

Revell’s winning throw was 36 feet even. Audrey Lucas, another sophomore, placed third in the discus with a toss of 97-1 and Revell in sixth at 91-10.

Newton finished sixth in a field of six teams. The Cardinals scored 52 points. Pella won the team title with 175 and Southeast Polk was second with 120 points. Host Grinnell was third with 88 points followed by Oskaloosa with 78 points and Williamsburg with 74 points.

Junior Kenna Winther finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14-6 1/2. In the high jump, sophomores Randi Walters and Hannah Boecker each cleared the bar at 4-6 with Walters taking fifth and Boecker in sixth.

On the track, the 800-meter sprint medley relay team turned in the top performance for the Cardinals. Walters and Winther combined with sophomores Morgann Eide and Alexis Stout for a third-place time of 2 minutes, 3.39 seconds.

Morgan Allen, a junior, took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 14.12 seconds. Freshman Rachel Rhoads ran fifth in the 1,500 meters in 5:24.82.

The Cardinals’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Eide, Stout, Boecker and Lucas was fourth in 1:12.21. Winther combined with senior Elise Axtell, Walters and sophomore Serenity Stier for sixth in the 4x100 relay race in 56.63 seconds.

Newton’s 4x800 relay foursome of sophomore Tessa Keeton, freshman Lakin Jenkins, senior Kaelee Knoll and freshman Caelyn Briley turned in a fourth-place time of 11:22.20. Sophomore Liz McVey, seniors Alex Hutchinson and Sydney Jenkins and Rhoads was fourth in 4:31.32 in the 1,600-meter distance medley relay.

In the 4x400-meter relay race, Newton’s team of Keeton, Lakin Jenkins, freshman Brunsmann and Allen was sixth in 4:41.53. The team of Allen, Stier, Brunsmann and Axtell posted a seventh-place time of 2:02.06 in the 4x200 relay race.

On Thursday, Newton competes at 5 p.m. at Pella.
