Newton High’s Madison Humphrey and Bethany Baumgartner worked a little extra time on the tennis court than their teammates in singles matches Tuesday. They got the job done in winning third-set tiebreakers.
Humphrey bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Norwalk’s Elizabeth Klawonn, 2-6, 7-5, 10-3. Baumgartner defeated Norwalk’s Emme Stockwell, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 10-4. Those wins allowed the Cardinals to carry a 6-0 lead into the doubles matches against visiting Norwalk.
Newton swept the doubles matches for an 11-0 Little Hawkeye Conference dual victory over the Warriors. The Cardinals are 3-2 in conference tennis action.
Baumgartner and Humphrey teamed up to win the No. 3 doubles match, 6-3, 6-3, over Norwalk’s Madison Thielen and Stockwell. Newton’s Sierria Griffith netted a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Thielen at No. 3 singles.
Newton’s No. 1 singles player Megan Pressgrove won 6-0, 6-0 over Nicole Alexander. Kate Wyre recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win over Norwalk’s Emma Tollefson. Pressgrove and Wyre won the No. 1 doubles match against Alexander and Tollefson, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, Newton’s Katherine Thorpe beat Kalei Owens, 6-0, 6-3. Thorpe combined with Griffith to give Newton a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Owns and Elizabeth Klawonn.
Elizabeth Myers and Kinzie Loree won the No. 4 doubles match for Newton — 6-3, 6-1 — against Jordan Bessler and Melinda Klawonn. Newton’s No. 5 doubles team of Natalie Camp and Leah Thomas won 6-0, 6-0 over Rebecca Scribano and Kenedi Wright.
Newton plays at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at home against Boone.

Harlie Durr and Alexis Hoffman won 7-5, Rylie Bakalar and Haley Walton won 6-3, Stacie Sanger and Vlada Osadcha won 6-4, Sommer Markham and Rachel Mullikin lost 6-3, Haley Rinehart and Anna Van Dam lost 6-3, Durr and Hoffman won 6-2.
Singles
Bakalar lost 7-6 (7-5), Walton won 7-5, Sanger won 6-4.
