Maxine Peterson

Maxine Peterson, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, was born Aug. 12, 1919, to Burr and Pearl Brutsman Hummel, at their farm in Kellogg Township. She attended a rural school and graduated in 1937, from Newton High School. During her youth she was a long-time 4-H Club member and enjoyed riding horse back. Maxine was an office employee in research and development at The Maytag Company for 32 years, retiring in 1974.

On Feb. 10, 1973, she married Zane Peterson and they lived on a farm in Palo Alto Township until 1988, when they moved to Newton. They enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in southern Texas. Following Zane’s death in 1989, Maxine volunteered at RSVP for 15 years. She was a member of Jasper County Farm Bureau and Jasper County Historical Society. In 2003, Maxine moved to Park Centre where she met and enjoyed many friends. Maxine died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Park Centre Skilled Care in Newton. She was 96 years old.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Surviving are her cousins, extended family members and friends.

A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26 at Newton Union Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.
