PCM takes second in Class A standings at Bengal Relays

GILBERT — Relays were once again part of the Prairie City-Monroe girls track team’s success Monday the Girls’ Bengals Invitational.

The Mustangs won the distance medley relay and the 4x400 relay while taking second in two others.

The 12 top-three finishes PCM garnered helped the Mustangs to a runner-up finish in the Class A standings.

Gilbert won the team title with 149 points. PCM had 117 points in second, while Webster City (98), Roland-Story (93) and Iowa Falls-Alden (86) rounded out the top five.

Seven different Mustangs runners were part of the two winning relays. Junior Tatum Nearmyer was on both winning teams.

The distance medley relay included senior Emily Hugen, freshman Megan Cowman, Nearmyer and junior Rachel Stafford, and their winning time was 4 minutes, 35.65 seconds.

The 4x400 relay consisted of junior Jayci Vos, freshman Maddie Samson, Nearmyer and senior Ashley Van Gorp. They finished with a winning time of 4:25.54.

The two silver medal relay performances came in the sprint medley relay and the 4x800 relay.

The sprint medley team included Hugen, Van Gorp, Vos and Stafford, and they finished in 1:58.87. The 4x800 relay was sophomore Amaya Hartson, freshman Kirstin Ives, senior Morgan Novak and freshman Alex Inskeep, and they hit the finish line in 11:18.

The relays weren’t the only thing that went well for PCM on Monday. Recording individual runner-up finishes were sophomore Ashley Miller in the 100 (14.42), freshman Payton Schut in the 800 (2:39.45), sophomore Baylee Smith in the 3,000 (13:01.04) and Vos in the 100 hurdles (17.36).

Freshman Morgan Uhlenhopp was right behind Miller in the 100 (third place in 14.51), while Van Gorp was third in the 200 (28.30). Schut took fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 5:35.17 and Samson was fourth in the discus with a toss of 87 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Two other relays — shuttle hurdle and 4x100 — came home with bronze medals.

The shuttle hurdle relay team included Cowman, Novak, freshman Delaney Clarke and Ives, and they hit the finish line in 1:22.70. The 4x100 team was Hugen, Vos, Nearmyer and Van Gorp, and they finished in 53.52.

The Mustangs’ last chance to qualify for the Drake Relays will come at 5 p.m. Thursday when they head to South Tama County.
