Field events lead PCM boys at ADM Invitational

GRIMES — Two wins and a 1-2 finish in the shot put led the Prairie City-Monroe boys track and field team on Friday night.

Junior Noah Clark won the discus with a 15-foot personal-best throw, while senior Gunnar Davis and junior Leevi Telfer went 1-2 in the shot put as the short-handed Mustangs finished seventh in the eight-team field.

The meet was hosted by ADM but took place at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.

DCG won the meet with 156 points. The next best team — Carroll — finished with 78. Winterset (71), ADM (68), Des Moines North (55) rounded out the top five. Ogden (53) was six points better than PCM (47), and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (30) finished eighth.

Clark had never hit a mark of more than 136 feet before Friday, but all three of his throws eclipsed the 140-foot mark.

His first two throws were both 144 feet, but he won the event with a 150 feet, 1 inch toss that puts him 11th overall in Class 2A. It also was far enough to set a meet record.

Davis’ winning throw in the shot put covered 43-2, while Telfer was the runner-up with a toss of 42-6.

The only other top finishes for the Mustangs were collected by junior Chris Ellens and senior Austin Sneller.

Sneller was the runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles as he hit the finish line in 17.1 seconds. Ellens was 2nd in the 3,200 with a time of 10:51. Both Sneller and Ellens ran into a very strong head wind, according to PCM coach Collin Harrison.

Three of the better Mustang sprinters — senior Tyler Dredge, junior Luke Greiner and sophomore Noah Anderson — were not available most of the night because of injuries.

PCM gets two final chances to qualify for the Drake Relays. The Mustangs are at BGM at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and at CMB at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
