Council to consider street projects

Several public works projects are on the agenda for the Newton City Council on Monday. Two of the projects involve street work throughout the city, while the third is a sanitary sewer lining project.

A public hearing will be held before a resolution goes before the council to award the contract for the South Second Avenue improvement project. The project includes pavement scarification and asphalt resurfacing, reconstructing the north and south curb and gutter, storm sewer upgrades, sidewalk replacement, streetscape trees and lighting and pedestrian curb ramp improvements at intersections.

A low bid from TK Concrete, Inc. in Pella of $1.18 million is recommended by city staff. Also recommended is the purchase of street light poles and fixtures from Lamplight Industries for $134,644.

The second street project before the council is Lincoln Street paving project. A public hearing will also be held on the topic before the resolution goes before the council.

Lincoln Street is a connecting road near the Iowa Speedway that is frequently used during race weekends. The paving project would turn the gravel road into a 24 foot wide paved roadway with ditches. The south part of the roadway will have a six foot wide paved shoulder to accommodate golf cart traffic during race events.

City staff recommends awarding to the bid to Manatts, Inc. of Brooklyn for $628,800. A final public hearing will be held to award the contract for the sanitary sewer lining project. Following the public hearing, a resolution on the matter will go before the council to award the bid.

The project includes lining approximately 6,508 lineal feet of sanitary sewer main and 26 manholes along with two added alternates for an additional 3,732 lineal feet of lining work.

The base project along with both alternates are recommended for approval to low bidder Municipal Pipe Tool Co., LLC of Hudson for $407,068.
