Newton JV boys, freshman girls and boys fall in games against Pella

PELLA — After playing a close first quarter, Newton High’s junior varsity boys lost ground against host Pella in Monday night’s basketball game. The Cardinal boys’ junior varsity lost 58-41 to the Little Dutch.

The Newton High freshman basketball teams also played Monday at Pella.

Newton’s freshman girls came up on the short end of a 60-36 decision to Pella’s Lady Dutch freshmen Monday. Pella had doubled up on the Cardinals, 22-11, by the end of the first quarter.

In the junior varsity boys’ contest, Newton trailed by one, 9-8, to Pella after one quarter of action. Pella began to pull away, leading 23-16 at halftime.

Newton boys’ assistant coach Tom Weeks said the Cardinal boys were hampered by poor execution. Newton was 7-of-10 from the free-throw line and Pella went 13-of-19 from the line.

Grayson Graham led the Newton boys with 18 points. Josh Gulling scored eight and Nate Van Zee had eight points. Tyler Stanton added five points.

Grant Garvis scored two points, grabbed five rebounds, had one steal and two assists. Keith Steinbach had two points, six rebounds and had two assists. Justin Fischer had two assists.

Newton’s freshman girls faced a 39-23 halftime deficit. They outscored Pella 10-7 in the third quarter, but the Lady Dutch finished the game on a 14-3 run.

The Cardinal girls shot 32 percent, 15-of-46, from the field and were 3-of-4 on foul shots. They had 23 rebounds.

Rachel Rhoads led Newton with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Emily Valtman scored nine points. Peyton Maher had eight points and three steals. Abbie Barr added six points. Teddie Brunsmann had two points and four rebounds.

The freshman boys lost 78-33 after trailing 36-17 at halftime. Cole Webster led the way with 16 points. Aaron Bartells had six points followed by Ryna Barr with four, Thomas cox with three and Taylor Griener and Luke Maharry with two apiece
