SULLY — In their final home doubleheader of the season, Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams had a packed house Friday with three of the four South Iowa Cedar League teams ranked in Class 1A. Two of the teams were undefeated and the other two only had one loss on the season.

Following the two SICL contests, all four teams have one loss.

It was a battle of ranked teams in the girls’ game. Class 1A ninth-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s Hawk girls put their 18-0 mark on the line against 1A 12th-ranked Montezuma. The Bravettes controlled things from the opening tip, leading 24-20 at halftime on their way to a 49-38 win over the Hawks.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys avenged their lone loss of the season by handing the visiting 1A seventh-ranked Braves a 57-38 setback. The Hawk boys and the Braves are each 16-1 overall. In South Iowa Cedar League action, the Braves are 14-1 and the Hawks are 12-1.

“The guys played a great game (Friday night),” L-S boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We did a lot of nice things on both ends of the floor. We did an excellent job taking care of the basketball against a team that pressures you.”

Lynnville-Sully led Montezuma 13-6 after one quarter and 26-15 at the break. The Braves outscored the Hawks, 14-11, in the third quarter, but Lynnville-Sully still led by eight going into the fourth quarter. The Hawks used a 20-9 scoring edge to finish off the victory.

Kyle Van Dyke had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds and he blocked six shots. Jesse Van Wyk tossed in 16 points and had four assist. Tyler Van Zante and Sage Ehresman each had four assist.

Rylan James added eight points for the Hawks and Ehresman scored five points. Van Zante scored four points and Canyon Kuhlmann had three points. John Trettin had two points.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys shot 42 percent, 21-of-50, from the field and knocked down 12-of-18 free throw attempts. The Hawks had 38 rebounds to the Braves’ 25 rebounds.

Brody McKeag scored 13 points for Montezuma and Logan Price had 10. The Braves shot just 26 percent, 14-of-54, from the field and went 6-of-9 at the line.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls had a tough go at home against Montezuma.

Montezuma was up 13-10 by the end of the first period and led the Hawks 24-20 at halftime. Lynnville-Sully faced a 31-26 deficit after three quarters and was outscored 16-12 in the final eight minutes.

“We didn’t play very well. We could never calm ourselves down to execute what we wanted to do on either end of the floor,” Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “Montezuma played well. They were the better team (Friday night).”

The Hawks shot 28 percent from the field, hitting 13-of-46. Montezuma connected on 16-of-39, 41 percent, from the field. The Bravettes sank 14-of-20 foul shots while the Hawks went 10-of-16 at the free-throw line.

“We were not being very efficient on offense and not moving the ball quickly enough to be able to attack gaps to get good shots, and that put a lot of pressure on our defense to get stops,” Hulsing said.

Brenna Lanser had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawk girls. Kasiah Ehresman had 10 points, three steals and two assists. Makenzy Rozendaal handed out three assists.

Marissa Vos scored eight points and controlled eight rebounds. Camryn Russell added two points.

Montezuma got 14 points from Shelby Helm and 10 points from Breck Goodman.

The Hawk girls and Bravettes are 18-1 overall and 14-1 in SICL play.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams have one more conference doubleheader Tuesday at Colfax-Mingo. The SICL girls’ teams play the conference crossover games Friday.

The Hawk boys have two more conference games after Tuesday, playing at Iowa Valley Thursday. The SICL boys’ crossover games are Feb. 12.
