Raiders struggle offensively in losses to North Polk

ALLEMAN — Both Collins-Maxwell/Baxter varsity basketball teams struggled offensively on Friday night during a Heart of Iowa Conference varsity doubleheader against North Polk.

The CMB boys fell behind 19-4 in the first quarter and never recovered in a 60-42 loss, while the Raider girls lost 59-20 after trailing 22-4 after one quarter.

Freshman Will Clapper scored 16 points and had six rebounds to lead the Raider boys, who fell to 2-12 overall and 2-9 overall. Junior Brady Kemp had nine points, while senior Hunter Gunderson grabbed seven boards and dished out three assists.

The Raiders trailed 6-4 with 4:20 to go in the first quarter, but North Polk scored 13 straight to grab control for good.

CMB got within 11 at halftime but was outscored 33-26 in the second half.

North Polk (9-5, 8-3) made 17-of-34 from the floor.

Brett Haun had 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the win, while Grant Rampton chipped in 17 points and seven boards. Max Karpinske scored 11 points.

The Raider girls never scored more than nine in a quarter and lost for the 10th time in the last 11 games. They trailed 22-4 after one quarter and were outscored 7-0 in the fourth.

Eleven players scored for North Polk, which was led by Riley Murphy and Rachel Zimmerman. Both Murphy and Zimmerman each scored 10 points.

North Polk improved to 9-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play, while CMB is 2-13 overall and 2-10 in the HOIC.

The Raiders travel to Prairie City-Monroe for a HOIC doubleheader Tuesday. The girls varsity game tips off at 6 p.m.
