Undefeated Hawk girls dominate two more teams

Defense is the fuel driving Class 1A 10th-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s girls on the basketball court. The Hawks posted two more double-digit victories over the weekend to remain undefeated.

The Hawk girls dominated North Mahaska, 49-21, at home in Sully Friday in South Iowa Cedar League West play. They led 20-2 after the first quarter, 30-6 at halftime and 38-8 at the end of third period.

On Saturday, Lynnville-Sully stepped out of conference action to take on Class 3A Albia on the road. The Hawks led the hosting Lady Dees, 12-9, after the first quarter and held a 27-19 halftime lead.

“In the first half, we did a good job on defense and offense to had a small lead,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “In the second half we did a better job of attacking the middle of the zone and finding our post for some easy baskets.”

The Hawks pulled away from the Lady Dees in the third quarter on a 23-15 run. They put the finishing touches on their 18th-straight win by outscoring Albia 18-8 in the fourth quarter.

“The girls did a better job of rebounding the ball and talking on screens to not let Albia get any easy baskets,” Hulsing said. Lynnville-Sully scored 17 points off 25 Albia turnovers.

Working the inside-outside game, Lynnville-Sully was led by guard Brenna Lanser with 20 points and post player Marissa Vos with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Lanser had three steals and three assists.

The Hawks had 18 steals in the game led by Mariah Vos with seven and Kasiah Ehresman with five. Ehresman scored 10 points and dished out five assists. Mariah Vos had seven points and five rebounds. Camryn Russell and Makenzy Rozendaal each had six points.

Lynnville-Sully shot 43 percent, 25-of-58, from the field and hit 13-of-31 free throw attempts. The Hawks had five 3-point field goals in the game. They had 34 rebounds.

Albia went 18-of-44, 40 percent, from the field and was 4-of-7 from the line. Hannah Isley scored 19 points to lead the Lady Dees.

At home Friday, Lanser paced the Hawk girls with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Marissa Vos had eight points and Ehresman tallied seven points, and she had three steals.

Russell, Mariah Vos and JaTaya Meyer each had three points. Scoring two points each were Rozendaal, Hailey Scandridge and McKinley Conover.

“Our defense was good (Friday night). I thought we did a good job of applying ball pressure and causing some turnovers,” Hulsing said. “On offense we moved the ball fairly well which allowed us to attack the rim for some good looks.”

The Hawks shot 48 percent, 19-of-39, from the field and dropped in 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. They had a 30-20 edge in rebounding over North Mahaska and forced 29 turnovers by the Warhawks.

North Mahaska was limited to 27 percent shooting, 9-of-33, from the field. The Warhawks got four points each from Elizabeth Rash and Andrea Loving.

Lynnville-Sully takes a break until Friday when Class 1A 15th-ranked Montezuma comes to Sully in a SICL West showdown. The Hawks are 18-0 and 14-0 in SICL play, and Montezuma is 16-1 and 12-1.
