Newton man sentenced for using hammer in attack

A Newton man, initially charged with attempted murder after he assaulted a woman with a hammer and choked her in November has been sentenced.

Abraham Stone, 33, of Newton, was sentenced Tuesday in Iowa District Court to no more than two years in state prison. He pleaded guilty to the charge of domestic abuse assault, stemming from a Nov. 16 incident at a residence in the 2800 block of West Highway F48 in Newton.

Jasper County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the residence regarding a domestic disturbance. There, they determined Stone had struck a woman with a hammer and choked her. The victim suffered only minor injuries.

Stone was arrested and taken to jail. In addition to the attempted murder charge, which is a Class B felony, Stone was also initially charged with going armed with intent, which is a Class D felony, and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury, which is an aggravated misdemeanor.

In addition to the prison sentence, Stone also has a non-contact order in place with the victim and must successfully complete the Iowa Domestic Abuse program.
