Lynnville-Sully squads defeat visiting BGM

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawk boys set the tone from the opening tip at home Tuesday against the BGM Bears. The Hawks pushed out to a 22-4 lead and never looked back in a South Iowa Cedar League West contest, winning 74-39.

Lynnville-Sully’s Class 1A 10th-ranked girls had a slower start Tuesday. They led the BGM girls, 10-7, after one quarter then caught fire for a 54-31 victory in SICL West play.

“We didn’t come ready to play to start the game,” Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “But once we started to play our game, we were able to cause some turnovers. We ran our offense better from the second quarter on and were able to get some good looks at the basket.”

The undefeated Hawk girls doubled up on the Bears in the second period, 16-8, to lead 26-15 at halftime. They outscored BGM 15-11 in the third quarter and finished on a 13-5 run in the fourth.

BGM’s girls racked up 17 steals against the Hawks, but only shot 26 percent, 12-of-46, from the field. The Bears had 30 turnovers. Lynnville-Sully committed 27 turnovers in a sloppy game, and had five steals.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls shot 54 percent, 19-to-35, from the field and cashed in on 14-of-25 free throw attempts. The Bears went 7-of-13 from the line. BGM held a 30-29 rebounding edge over the Hawks.

Marissa Vos poured in 20 points and had two steals for the Hawk girls. Brenna Lanser added 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made two steals. Mariah Vos scored 10 points and controlled nine rebounds.

Kasiah Ehresman fired in seven points and dished out four assists. Camyrn Russell scored two points.

Leading BGM (5-7) was Aimee Höchstetler with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Lynnville-Sully girls improved to 16-0 overall. They lead the SICL West at 13-0.

Winning their ninth straight game, Lynnville-Sully’s boys had four players score in double digits against BGM. The Hawks are second in the SICL West at 10-1 and 13-1 overall while BGM is 10-5 overall.

“The guys came ready to play tonight. We were able to create a gap in the first quarter,” Hawk boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “I thought we did a nice job of moving the basketball side to side and inside out. We were also able to create an advantage on the boards.”

After a 22-4 opening quarter surge, the Hawk boys stayed on course for a 39-16 halftime lead. They outscored the Bears, 21-11, in the third quarter and 14-12 in the final eight minutes of play.

Lynnville-Sully shot 50 percent, 30-of-60, from the field while holding the Bears to 33 percent, 14-of 43. The Hawks sank 10-of-13 from the free-throw line and the Bears were 6-of-7. Lynnville-Sully owned a 39-17 edge in rebounding over BGM.

On the inside, the Hawks got 19 points and nine rebounds from Kyle Van Dyke and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Rylan James. Jesse Van Wyk netted 17 points and handed out seven assists. Tyler Van Zante scored 13 points.

Sage Ehresman added five points for the Hawks. Canyon Kuhlmann had three points, four steals and four assists, and John Trettin scored three points and grabbed six rebounds. Elijah Collsin and Ryan Hofer each tossed in two points.

The Bears got 12 points and 11 rebounds from Tanner Jansen and 12 points from Kaiden Fiebelkorn.

The Lynnville-Sully teams have back-to-back games at the end of the week. They host North Mahaska Friday in SICL West action at Sully then play a non-conference doubleheader at Albia Saturday.
