Larson’s double-double not enough for CMB girls

BAXTER — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s girls basketball team had six made 3-pointers in the first four games of the season.

Tuesday, seniors Carter Larson and Bridget Hurley combined to knock down five against North Polk, but not even those buckets and Larson’s double-double could propel the Raiders to their first Heart of Iowa Conference win.

CMB (1-4 overall and 0-4 in HOIC) led by four after one quarter, but North Polk (2-3, 2-2) rallied with a big second quarter and finished it off with an 18-point fourth frame during a 50-42 road win.

Larson finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Hurley had nine points and 10 boards. Larson was 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Hurley made two of her three attempts.

Kathleen Baldwin had six points and eight rebounds. Sydney Ziesman pulled down six rebounds and delivered four assists, and Mikayla Eslinger had six points and six rebounds. The Raiders grabbed 51 rebounds in the contest.

BOYS

North Polk 60, CMB 44

Another slow start plagued the CMB boys Tuesday night. North Polk led 12-3 after one quarter, pushed the margin to 38-19 at the break and cruised from there in winning by 16.

The Raiders got 15 points from freshman Will Clapper. He was 9-of-10 from the free- throw line.

Junior Brady Kemp had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior Hunter Gunderson added nine points and nine boards.

CMB (0-4 overall and 0-4 in HOIC) had a 12-point advantage from the foul line, but the Raiders did not make a 3-pointer and hit only 14-of-44 from the floor.

North Polk (2-1, 2-1) connected on 26-of-49 from the floor.

Grant Rampton made 8-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from long range and finished with a game-high 20 points. The Comets also got 14 points from Caleb Lomica and 11 points from Brett Haun.

CMB hosts Prairie City-Monroe Friday in a HOIC doubleheader in Baxter. The girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m.
