Newton YMCA to host open house Tuesday

Facility acquires new Cybex, Precor fitness equipment

It’s out with the old and in with the new at the Newton YMCA this fall. The Newton YMCA has acquired 30 new pieces of state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment and is planning a community open house from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday to showcase its new cardio and strength training studios. The event will include tours, food and a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new equipment at 5:15 p.m.

“A lot of improvements have been made over the past few years and we’re excited now to offer our members brand new Cybex and Precor fitness equipment that is among the best in the industry,” CEO Frank Buckley said.

In all, the new equipment includes: 11 treadmills, three arc trainers, two upright bikes, two recumbent bikes, 10 Eagle strength stations, a Bravo functional trainer, five elliptical machines, a Prestige fly and rear delt machine and a Prestige dip and chin-up assist machine.

The new equipment began arriving in late October with the final installation taking place earlier this month. Already members are making extensive use of the equipment.

“I found that it was an easy transition from the old machines to the new,” Newton YMCA member Bruce Hoffmeier said. “Each of the machines work different core muscles with an adjustable degree of difficulty for each participant. A really great upgrade for the Y.”

The new strength pieces offer a wider variety of motion and greater fitness options for Y patrons.

“Instead of it being in a fixed path or movement pattern we can actually do a free range of motion on the machines,” Fitness Coordinator Thomas Hlad said. “And you can do unilateral movement, so say you have a weaker side, you can work on just one side at a time.”

Likewise, the new cardio equipment also offers more options, including an increased range of programs to target specific workout needs. The arc trainers, for example, offer strength, shaping and toning programs.

“The toning program will tell you where you want to tone. Once you go into the program, it will adjust your incline or ramp so you’re working on just your hamstrings or glutes,” Hlad said. “There’s basically something for everybody.”

Community members can check out the new equipment up close and personal on Tuesday. In the meantime, anyone is welcome to stop by the YMCA any time for a tour and to see the new studios.
