Warm clothing drive underway at the Newton library

The library is collecting warm clothes to distribute to Newton Community Schools to be given to kids in need of all ages. Drop off new warm clothing at the library checkout counter between Oct. 19 and Oct. 31. Items being collected are sweatshirts and hoodies, gloves, hats, scarves, coats and socks. Reminder that items must be new. Last year we filled the shopping cart; let’s see if we can do better this year.

Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Enter a pumpkin in our Book Character Pumpkin Decorating contest. Decorate a pumpkin as a book character: paint, dress, and/or accessorize it, but do not carve it. You can enter as a family or as an individual. Winners will be determined by popular vote. Entries will be accepted until Saturday and will be displayed in the children’s library. The public will vote ballot-style for their favorite entry. The winner will be announced Oct. 31 and will win a gift basket of children’s books, DVDs and other Halloween treats.

Little Free Library

Visit the Little Free Library in Sersland Park (next to Newton Daily News). All books in the Little Free Library are free. Feel free to take a book or leave a book.

Card Game Night

Join us in the Library Meeting Room at 6 p.m. Monday for Card Game Night. Lemonade will be served, fun will be had, and friends will be made. Cards are supplied.

Morning Movie: Inside Out

Free movie showing of “Inside Out” in the library meeting room at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 4. Open to all ages. Synopsis: After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions — Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness — conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Google Email Class

The library is offering an email class from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 6. Participants will set-up an email account through Gmail and learn how to check their inbox, compose a message and delete messages. Registration required, call 641-792-4108. Class size is limited to five.

Storyteller Pippa White with ‘Voices from Ellis Island’

Pippa White will return to the Newton Public Library at 6 p.m. Nov. 9. Patrons may remember Pippa from her performance this summer with “The Story of the Orphan Train.” Pippa calls her One’s Company Productions “Part theatre, part storytelling, part history.” Audiences call them unique, captivating and touching. “Voices from Ellis Island” is a dramatization of true experiences of immigrants who passed through America’s “Front door to freedom: in the early part of this century. It is estimated that 40 percent of the current United States population have ancestors who passed through Ellis Island.

Lego Donations

Librarian Phyllis Peter is looking to add a Lego playtime but is in desperate need of Legos. If you have any you would be willing to donate, please drop them off at the library.
