Newton JV volleyball claims second at PCM tourney

MONROE — With a three-set win over Prairie City-Monroe, Newton High’s Cardinals captured second place at the PCM junior varsity volleyball tournament Monday.

The Cardinals lost their opener to Pella in three sets. Pella rallied to win 12-15, 15-11, 15-11. Newton regrouped to down Knoxville 15-12, 15-6.

Newton defeated PCM 15-11, 7-15, 15-10.

“We lost the first match with Pella because of lack of communication on the court,” Newton assistant coach Kristina McKnew said. “The girls communicated much better in the next two matches, and they won.”

McKnew said the Cardinals played more aggressively on the court against Knoxville and PCM. They did the little things well, she said.

Newton travels to Grimes Tuesday to play Dallas Center-Grimes in Little Hawkeye Conference action.
