NHS freshman volleyball play

DES MOINES — Newton High’s freshmen split two-set matches against host Des Moines East’s two freshman volleyball teams Saturday. They lost three matches in the East freshman tournament.

“The girls had a lot of positive events in the tournament,” Newton freshman head coach Michaela Wood said. “We had a hard battle in the first set with Johnston before coming up short along with Dowling Catholic and ADM.”

Against East B, Newton lost the first set, 21-19, and won the second set, 21-12. Jazmin Chance, Brittney McConnell and Mariah Wickliffe each had three service aces for the Cardinals.

Tegan Simmons and Sierra Anderson had two aces and Hannah Edwards served one ace. Simmons led the net game with three kills followed by McConnell, Ariel Lum and Desirae Shelton with two kills each.

In the match with East A, Newton won the first set, 21-18, and lost the second set, 21-18. Simmons had two kills and two ace serves while McConnell served up three aces and had one kill. Lum downed three kills. Chance and Anderson each had an ace serve.

“We had lots of attempts at the net to attack, but didn’t capitalize on certain situations,” Wood said. “We will have to get some rest and bounce back Monday as we travel to Saydel for a tournament.”

ADM defeated Newton 21-14, 21-3. Simmons was 4-of-5 serving with one ace and had a kill. McConnell had one ace and Lum had one kill.

Dowling beat the Cardinals 21-15, 21-12. McConnell went 6-of-7 serving with two aces, and downed two kills. Lum had two kills and Anderson served an ace.

Johnston defeated Newton 21-15, 21-0. Lum delivered two kills and Simmons had one kill for Newton.
