Pet owners should be responsible for their safety

This is in regard to the Sept. 10 letter a lady wrote about a puppy left suffering in a hot vehicle in the Hy-Vee parking lot.

The puppy owner and the policeman were very rude to this senior lady. I wonder why other shoppers didn’t go and stand by this lady. Too busy? Didn’t want to get involved? I would have stood by her.

The policeman told her since it was 86 degrees that day it would have been cooler in the vehicle than outside. That’s a crazy thing to say. He also told her that leaving the puppy in the hot vehicle to suffer wasn’t illegal. All animal abuse and cruelty is illegal.

When I was in Fareway last week, a policeman was in the front of the store. I was told someone called the police because a dog was screaming in a vehicle outside. The dog owner came to the front of the store laughing and saying the dog always gets upset like that when left alone in a vehicle. I would ask the woman why she would have her dog alone in a vehicle if he gets upset to that degree? It was getting dark and had cooled off a little so I don’t think anything was done about this.

I’ve bought two of those devices that break vehicle windows. If I have to use them to save a child or an animal, so be it. I’ve heard the dog owners press charges but never show up in court.
