Freshman Cardinals drop home game against Grinnell

Newton High’s freshman football team is 1-2 on the season. The Cardinals lost 20-14 at home Friday against Grinnell after holding a 14-0 lead.

“We have got to figure out how to finish games as a team,” Newton freshman head coach Trent Powers said. “The good news is we are improving each week, and we get another opportunity to play Friday.”

Thomas Cox scored on a 5-yard touchdown run and had a two-point conversion for Newton. Cole Webster hauled in a touchdown pass from Ryan Barr as the play covered 33 yards.

Cox rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries and Coltin Whitten had 31 yards on eight carries. Norbert Riyazimana carried the ball five times and gained 21 yards. Mason Lee had 11 yards on four carries.

Barr went 4-of-11 passing for 73 yards, and had a touchdown pass and an interception. Webster finished with 58 yards on three catches. Cox had one catch for 15 yards.

Josh Miller led the Newton defense with 10 tackles. Josh Adkinson recorded a quarterback sack and had seven tackles. Jackson Poulson and Whitten each had five tackles. Jacob Murphy recovered a fumble and made three tackles.

Newton plays Benton Friday at Van Horne. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m.
