CMB, Lynnville-Sully girls run hot at Pella Invitational

PELLA — Only two seniors finished in the top 10 of the girls’ small school division cross country race in Saturday’s Pella Invitational. One of those was Lynnville-Sully’s Marissa Vos, who finished the 5K race in 23 minutes. 44 seconds for sixth.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Lynnville-Sully were the area girls’ teams competing in the meet on a hot and humid morning on the Central College cross country course. CMB was led to second place as a team by freshman Brenna Thomson as she ran the course in 23:23 for fourth place.

Finishing in front of Thomson were a trio of North Polk underclassmen. North Polk sophomore Amelia Lesher won the race in 22:41.

North Polk won the team title with 26 points and CMB was second with 45 points. Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks finished fourth with 87 points.

“I’m proud of our runners today. They did a great job of competing in some pretty intense conditions with the heat and humidity,” CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts said. “The girls ran some great times on a tough course.”

Joining Thomson in the scoring for CMB’s Raiders were junior Heather Jessen, freshmen Lauren Ratliff and Shasta Moody and senior Chasity Moody. Jessen ran the race in 23:48 placing seventh followed by Ratliff in eighth place in 24:06. Shasta Moody took 10th in 24:28 and Chasity Moody was 16th in 26:28.

The second Hawk runner to cross the finish line was junior Ida Byggeth for 17th in 26:30. Senior Kasiah Ehresman placed 19th in 26:59 followed by sophomore Hailey Scandridge in 21st at 27:00. Junior Haley James ran 24th in 28:04.

Other Raider runners were junior Anna Jones finishing 23rd in 27:49 and senior Courtney Clapper placing 27th in 29:04. Lynnville-Sully had junior Kristine Jaennette placing 26th in 28:26 and senior Shelby Foster in 29th in 30:16. There were 32 runners in the small school division.

Prairie City-Monroe elected not to run in the meet because of the heat.

Lynnville-Sully runs Tuesday in the Grinnell Invitational. Thursday, CMB is at the Greene County Invitational and PCM goes to the Johnston Invitational.
