Old-fashioned baking ingredient makes comeback at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES — The traditional shortening used in baking was the featured ingredient in the Make It With Lard competition, judged Monday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Barb Miller, of Prairie City, received second in quick breads — muffins and quick breads — nut bread categories. She also received third in desserts — chocolate chip cookies, desserts — cookies other than named, quick breads — corn bread and quick breads — fruit bread categories.

Entries were judged on taste, flavor, texture, appearance and best use of lard.
