Newton booster club membership drive underway

Club has golf tournament, Grid Iron Girls on tap Sunday and Aug. 13

Newton High teams are a little less than a week away from fall sports practices beginning.

The Newton Athletic Booster Club has its annual membership drive underway. Tony Pressgrove, membership co-chairman, said both individuals and businesses can support the athletic programs by becoming athletic booster club members.

Both individual and business memberships are available at many levels and may include single game tickets or season passes to high school and middle school home athletic events. Business memberships also include advertising in the fall and spring athletic programs, as well as a variety of other promotional options.

The booster club has several upcoming events, including Sunday’s Newton Cardinal Golf Tournament at Westwood Golf Course. The club will sponsor trivia night, Drive One For Your School and school dances.

The Newton Cardinal Golf Tournament is a 4-person best shot event Sunday. Entry fees are $50 per person or $200 per team, which includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, lunch and prizes. Payment will be collected at registration Sunday at the golf course.

There are two shot-gun tee times — 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. — and registration is at 7 a.m. and noon. The morning session is full, but spots are still available for the afternoon session.

Call or stop by Westwood Golf Course to reserve a spot in the tournament as space is limited. The course telephone number is 641-792-3087.

There will be hole-in-one prizes of a trip to Hawaii, a Kindle Fire, Nike golf club set and $500. There are multiple hole sponsors for the event.

The club’s third annual Grid Iron Girls night is Aug. 13 for the ladies — freshman age and up — to learn about the game of football. Newton High head football coach Ed Ergenbright and his coaching staff explain the fundamentals of the game.

It’s $25 per person, which includes a Grid Iron Girls T-shirt. It is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 13 at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Contact Kerry and Mindi Walker at 641-521-5597 to register and give T-shirt size.

Grid Iron Girls is for moms, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, friends of football players who want to better understand the game. Participants even go through a few drills and plays the Cardinal football players do during practices and games. Refreshments will be provided.

Last year the booster club donated more than $60,000 to the Newton Athletic Department. Funds have been used toward Cardinal Power, uniforms, warm‐up suits, balls, nets and other equipment.

“We invite you to join this great team of boosters who support our kids and their athletic programs,” Pressgove said. “A membership form can be obtained at the athletic booster’s membership table during school registration or during the first home football game. Individuals can also join through the Athletics link on the school’s website.”
