Mustang offense breaks out in win over Rockets

ALBIA — Prairie City-Monroe’s baseball team kept its late-season momentum going Monday night during the opening round of the Class 2A District 11 Tournament.

The fifth-seeded Mustangs put up crooked numbers in three innings and rolled to a 13-3, six-inning victory over fourth-seeded Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

The game was played Monday after getting rained out on Saturday.

Clay Cooper had two hits and four RBIs to lead PCM at the plate, while Chase Keuning had two hits and two RBIs and Connor Warrick doubled, scored three times and had three RBIs.

PCM led 1-0 after one inning but blew past the Rockets, scoring five in the third, three in the fifth and ended it with a four-run six inning.

The big offensive performance by PCM was more than enough for starter Austin Brown, who got the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits in five innings. Brown struck out five and walked only one in the victory.

Trey Lindsay had one hit, one run, one walk and two RBIs at the top of the order, while Jerod DeVries added two hits and walked once. Sheldon Speers also had one hit, two runs, two walks and an RBI.

Noah Henkenius relieved Brown in the sixth and he tossed a scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout.

The Mustangs had 11 hits and drew nine walks in the win over an Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (11-27) team that ended the season with four straight losses.

PCM (9-16) takes a three-game win streak into Tuesday night’s 5 p.m. district semifinal against top-seeded Davis County (22-7). Davis County has won six straight games.

The other semifinal pits second-seeded Albia against third-seeded Pella Christian. The Eagles downed sixth-seeded Central Decatur, 9-4, on Monday.
