Cardinal JV loses to Knoxville

KNOXVILLE — Newton High’s junior varsity baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Knoxville Thursday.

Knoxville beat the Cardinals 8-3 in the opener. Newton scored a run in the first inning and two in the fifth inning.

Trey Vanderlaan pitched three innings for Newton, allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk. Keith Steinbach threw one inning, giving up one run on one hit and one walk. Vanderlaan struck out two and Steinbach notched one struck out.

Tyler Stanton drove in two runs on two singles. Vanderlaan, Steinbach, Brennen Dodd and Reese Rosenquist each had a base hit.

The Cardinals scored a run in the first inning of the second game and one in the fifth, losing 3-2. Knoxville broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third frame.

Josh Gulling went the distance for the Cardinals. He threw a two-hitter while walking three and striking out two.

Dodd and Logan Zibert each had a single for Newton.
