McWhirter, Caple guide Raiders to win over Woodward-Granger

COLLINS — Sophomore Hunter McWhirter had four hits, four RBIs and two runs and the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter baseball team rallied past Woodward-Granger and recorded its first non-conference victory of the season Tuesday.

McWhirter was 4-for-4 at the plate with a walk, while Creighton Caple had three hits and scored three runs to help the Raiders improve to 7-14 on the season.

CMB trailed 2-0 after two but plated runs in four straight innings to complete the comeback. The Raiders trimmed the lead to 2-1 after three and then scored four in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away.

Woodward-Granger scored a run in the sixth and seventh to shorten the gap, but that’s as close as it.

The Raiders had 10 hits in the game and stranded 12 runners on base. Seth Balke, Brady Kemp and Nate Bishop each had a hit, while Spencer Gauch drove in two runs and Tucker Maxwell scored two runs. Bishop and Kemp each scored a run.

Kemp (1-1) earned his first win of the year on the mound. He tossed the first four innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and fanning two. Caple threw the final three innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and walking two and striking out two.

Race Brant had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Hawks, while Alex Bodermann had two hits. Woodward-Granger (15-10) had four errors and stranded six on base.

Dylan Garland took the loss for the Hawks, but only allowed one earned run in 3 2/3 innings.

Both CMB and Woodward-Granger will play in Class 2A District 14 when the tournament begins Saturday and Tuesday’s game was a potential district final preview.

The Raiders travel to Madrid at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. That is a first-round district preview as the teams open the postseason at 5 p.m. Saturday in Ogden.
