MONROE — Prairie City-Monroe’s Rachel Freland was the winning pitcher in the circle with three strikeouts and Molly Vignovich had two hits and three RBIs as the Mustang duo helped PCM defeat Gilbert on Senior Night Thursday in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The Mustangs defeated the Tigers, 10-0, in five innings as senior Makenna VanVeen also had a hit and a stolen base.

Freland improved to 15-9 on the year and sent her earned run average below 3 on the season.

Sophomores Abby Waddell and Kayla Jennings were both 2-for-3. Waddell also scored twice and had two RBIs.

PCM ended the regular season with an overall record of 21-10 and it finished 13-5 in HOIC play, which will end up being good enough for at least third place.

The Mustangs won their third straight game and will host Davis County in the first round of Class 3A regionals on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.

CMB 5, Saydel 3

COLLINS — The Raiders won their seventh straight and got one step closer to a runner-up finish in the Heart of Iowa Conference after a come-from-behind win.

Abbey Kahler hit a two-run home run in the first inning and earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Kahler’s homer put the Raiders up 2-0 as MacKenzie Schmitz also scored. Saydel answered with a two-run home run of its own in the fourth.

CMB thought it took the lead in the fifth when Harlie Durr laced a shot to the fence. The Raiders thought the ball cleared the fence, but the umpires decided that the ball was brought back into play by the Eagles outfielder, which gave Durr a double.

She was stranded on base, and Saydel took the lead with a solo homer in the top of the sixth.

But the Raiders rallied in the bottom half. Payge Jurgens reached on a one-out error. She went to second on Abbey Appelgate’s single and Mikayla Eslinger walked to load the bases.

Hannah Caple tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice before pinch hitter Veronica Condon reach on an error to load the bases. Durr then drove in the winning runs with a two-run hit.

Durr finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Raider offense, while Kahler also had two RBIs. Megan Ritter, Jurgens and Appelgate accounted for the other CMB hits.

The Raiders are now 18-13 overall and 13-4 in HOIC play. They can lock up second place in the conference with a win over Class 3A No. 4 Greene County in Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Rams (25-6, 15-1) suffered their first conference loss Thursday, losing 5-3 at home to Roland-Story.

Lynnville-Sully 8, BGM 3

SULLY — Kasiah Ehresman had two hits, two runs and two stolen bases to lead the Class 2A No. 6 Hawks to a seventh straight win on Thursday afternoon.

Lynnville-Sully led 1-0 after one inning but plated seven in the fourth to win going away. BGM scored three in the sixth but it wasn’t enough to hand the Hawks their first conference loss.

The Hawks also defeated Keota, 7-0 and 7-0, in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader on Thursday night, according to quikstatsiowa.com.

Against BGM, Madison Rasmusson had two RBIs, one run and one hit at the plate and allowed five hits and no earned runs for a win in the circle.

The Hawks cranked out seven hits total. Also getting one hit apiece was Lizzi VanManen, Lysandra James, Riley Rockwell and Maria Rasmusson. Rockwell, Brenna Lanser, Bayli VanManen and Lizzi VanManen all scored a run and James, Rockwell and Lizzi VanManen each had an RBI.
