Cardinals deep freeze Polar Bears

DES MOINES — Pounding out 12 hits in five innings of play, Newton High’s Cardinals took care of business against host Des Moines North Thursday. It was an early night for the NHS baseball team, winning 10-0 in a run-rule shortened game.

“We went out and took care of business as we intended to tonight. We hit the ball hard and made the routine plays,” said Dustin Brisel, Newton head coach. “Tyler (Wood) was throwing strikes and our guys played solid defense behind him.”

Tyler Wood limited the Polar Bears to one hit, walked two and struck out six. Wood was part of the offensive attack with a single and a double.

Drew Stout ripped out three singles in his three plate appearances for the Cardinals. Michael Barr hit two singles. Jeff Stanton, Duncan Lee, Connor Gholson, Mike McCormick and Jordan Travis connected for a single apiece.

“Drew has become an excellent leadoff batter for us this season. Our kids made good swings at good pitches and put the ball in play,” Brisel said. “It was good to get on the field and play. We turn our focus to Friday’s conference games at home against Grinnell.”

Newton (12-6) hadn’t played since Monday. The Cardinals take a 6-3 Little Hawkeye Conference record into Friday’s conference matchup with Grinnell. The varsity game is at 7:30 p.m. at Eversman Field in Woodland Park.

Stanton’s base hit was to center also, then Wood reached on a one-out error allowing a run to come in. Barr had an RBI single.
