CMB, Lynnville-Sully fall in their conference action

Area baseball Roundup —

COLLINS — Much like the storms across the state Monday evening, North Polk’s Comets made some thunder in the first inning of a 14-1 win over host Collins-Maxwell/Baxter.

The Comets hit three home runs in a six-run first inning. Luke Leonald and Blake Braver cranked out back-to-back solo shots, then later in the frame Ryan Polich unleashed a two-run home run.

CMB wasn’t able to dig out of a 10-0 deficit after two innings in the Heart of Iowa Conference game. The Comets led 11-0 before the Raiders got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning.

CMB avoided a shutout when it strung together three of its five hits to produce a run. With one gone, Brady Stover, Hunter McWhirter and Seth Balke connected for base hits. Balke drove in Stover for the score.

McWhirter and Balke each had two singles in the contest. Stover hit one base hit.

Creighton Caple started the game on the mound. He worked one inning and was charged with six runs on five hits and one walk, plus he had one strikeout.

Bryce Bacon pitched 2 1/3 innings for the Raiders, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and three walks and striking out one. Travis Lindemoen threw 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one batter.

The Raiders are 5-7 in HOIC play and 5-10 overall. They host HOIC rival Prairie City-Monroe for a 7:30 p.m. game Wednesday in Collins.

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s offense is struggling. The Hawk baseball team has three hits in its last two South Iowa Cedar League games, and those came Monday in a home loss to Iowa Valley.

The Tigers used an eight-hit attack to notch an 11-2 win over the Hawks in Sully. Iowa Valley’s Austin Carney issued two walks to the Hawks, but struck out nine batters.

It was a 1-1 game after the first inning. Iowa Valley began piling up runs — three in the second, one in the third, two in the fifth and four in the seventh. Lynnville-Sully scored a run in the sixth.

The Hawks are 8-6 overall and 7-5 in SICL action. They host English Valleys in conference play Tuesday and Keota on Wednesday.

Lynnville-Sully was shutout, 10-0 Friday at Sigourney. The Hawks were denied a hit in the game. Peyton Crawford threw the no-hitter for Sigourney, striking out 15 Lynnville-Sully batters.
