Nancy Kochs Shaw

Nancy Kochs Shaw, the daughter of Herbert W. and Elizabeth (Kennedy) Kochs, was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Evanston, Ill. She graduated from the Latin School of Chicago and attended Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. On June 26, 1945, Nancy was united in marriage with Eustace Kilgour “E.K.” Shaw in Chicago, Ill.

Nancy was a strong supporter of the Newton community. Her efforts included the Jasper County Arts, Skiff Medical Center Auxiliary, the Newton YMCA and as a classroom volunteer and reader at Woodrow Wilson. Nancy was a longtime member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, P.E.O. Chapter HS, the Skiff Auxiliary and was a trustee for the Kenmore Foundation of Fredericksburg, Va. She enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time at the cabin in northern Minnesota. Nancy was a dear lady who had a genuine interest for others.

Nancy died Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center — West Lakes in West Des Moines. She was 89 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, E.K. on Nov. 6, 2009; her sister, Susan Judevine; and a half-brother, Martin Kochs.

Those left to honor Nancy’s memory include her sons, William (Amy) Shaw of Dixon, Ill., and Robert (Lillian) Shaw of Taos, N.M.; her grandchildren, Charles (Carrie) Shaw, Meredith Shaw, Michael (Liz) Shaw and William Shaw; her half-sister, Judith Shaw and her half-brothers, William Kochs and Justin Kochs.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, June 22 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be designated to the Deerfield Foundation/ Shaw Butterfly Project and may be left at the church or at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton.
