Saydel gets walk-off win against CMB

DES MOINES — Rece Martin had three hits at the plate and struck out 11 on the mound to lead the Saydel baseball team to a 3-2, eight-inning win over Collins-Maxwell/Baxter on Friday night in a battle between two teams that entered the night tied with Roland-Story for second in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Saydel struck first in its opening at-bat. The Eagles took advantage of a two-out error to plate an unearned run.

The lead held up all the way to the sixth inning, but the Raiders took advantage of one of their few scoring chances.

Brady Stover led off the game with a single and then took second on Seth Balke’s one-out infield single. An error at first base allowed Stover to score and Balke to reach second and Balke eventually got to third on a wild pitch.

CMB (5-3 in HOIC) then took the lead when sophomore clean-up hitter Brady Kemp laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that scored Balke.

Saydel, helped out by another CMB error, answered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth to tie it at 2. The Eagles won it in the bottom of the eighth inning when Martin singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Boehler and then scored on T.J. Stephenson’s walk-off RBI single.

Balke went the distance on the mound for CMB. He allowed three runs — two earned — on 10 hits and struck out five while walking one. Balke also went 2-for-3 with a run scored at the plate and reached base three times.

Singles by Stover and Kemp were the only other hits by CMB.

The Raiders committed four errors and left three on base. Saydel had two errors and stranded eight but still won its seventh in a row.

Martin tossed the first seven innings for Saydel (10-4, 6-2) and allowed no earned runs on four hits and fanned 11.
