Hawk teams win at Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams made a clean sweep of varsity action Friday at Belle Plaine in South Iowa Cedar League games.

The Hawk baseball team scored four runs in the sixth to break at 5-5 tie. Lynnville-Sully defeated host Belle Plaine, 9-5, to improve to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

“We fought through some tough breaks early and kept hitting the ball. The hits and runs started to come,” said Bob Scandridge, Lynnville-Sully baseball head coach. “This team is becoming more resilient in working through the tough situations which will make us a tougher team to beat down the road.”

Tyler Van Zante worked 2 2/3 innings in relief of Lynnville-Sully starter Jake Brand. Van Zante got the win, holding Belle Plaine scoreless on one hit and striking out two. Brand pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Hawks, and was charged with five runs on five hits and four walks. Brand struck out four.

Kobe Fisk had a single and drove in three runs. Kyle Van Dyke doubled and tripled. Caden Dunsbergen and Caleb James each had two singles. Ross Van Wyk stole two bases. Van Wyk, Van Zante and Baker Zegers each had a single.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls notched two wins Friday night, getting past Belle Plaine 8-5 and 8-4 in a varsity doubleheader. The Class 1A sixth-ranked Hawk girls moved to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play.

In the opener, Lynnville-Sully led host Belle Plain 3-2 on single runs in the first three innings. It was 5-5 after five innings and the Hawks plated three runs in the seventh.

Lynnville-Sully held a 7-1 lead at the end of four innings in the second game. Belle Plaine did score three runs in the fifth, but the Hawks had 8-4 lead.

Madison Rasmusson recorded the pitching victory in both games for Lynnville-Sully. In the first game, she gave up five hits and struck out four, then in the second contest, she allowed five hits and seven strikeouts.

Kasiah Ehresman and Riley Rockwell had two singles apiece in the opener and Ehresman had four stolen bases. Jelissa Rozendaal tripled. Hitting a single each were Madison Rasmusson, Lizzy Van Manen, Lysandra James and Haley James.

Lysandra James connected for a single and a triple for Lynnville-Sully in the second game. Hitting a single each were Ehresman, Brenna Lanser, Madison Rasmusson and Makenzy Rozendaal.

The Hawk girls hosted a tournament Saturday in Sully.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams host West Marshall Tuesday.
