Jurgens homers in CMB’s shutout win over PCM

MONROE — A pair of streaks ended Wednesday night when Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s softball team upset Class 3A No. 11 Prairie City-Monroe on the road.

Payge Jurgens hit her first home run of the year, and Abbey Kahler held the high-powered Mustang offense to five hits over seven innings and the Raiders shut out PCM, 4-0.

CMB ended a four-game losing skid with the win, while PCM had its three-game winning streak snapped.

“We got a good win tonight,” CMB coach Troy Houge said. “I don’t know exactly how long its been, but we haven’t traditionally played well there.”

MacKenzie Schmitz started the game with a walk after falling behind 0-2. She came around to score on Jurgens’ homer and the Raiders led 2-0 early.

That lead held up through the fifth inning. In the sixth, Abbey Appelgate was hit by a pitch, Mikayla Eslinger singled and Harlie Durr made it 3-0 with a two-run single that blooped into right field.

CMB made it 4-0 in the seventh. Schmitz reached on an error to begin the frame and took second on the throw. Megan Ritter followed with a single and then Schmitz scored later when PCM made an error trying to pick her off third base.

Kahler earned the win in the circle for CMB. The sophomore allowed only five hits and struck out six in earning her second victory of the year.

PCM senior Rachel Freland took the loss for the Mustangs. She struck out 11 but PCM’s bats went quiet at the dish.

Jurgens had two hits to lead the Raiders at the plate. Mustang senior Molly Vignovich had two of PCM’s five hits and one was a double.
