Comets claim sweep of CMB, L-S beats Keota

ALLEMAN — A first-inning home run was all the North Polk softball team needed against Collins-Maxwell/Baxter on Monday night.

Rebecca Rimathe went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs and Olivia Patterson threw a seven-hitter in the circle as the Comets edged the Raiders, 2-1.

Abbey Applegate and Avery Hlavacek each had two hits for CMB, which falls to 1-4 on the season.

Hlavacek’s RBI double in the fourth was the only run the Raiders could muster against Patterson, who fanned three and walked one in the complete-game win.

Megan Ritter also walked and singled for the Raiders. Abbey Kahler had one of CMB’s hits at the plate and also struck out six and allowed two earned runs on six hits in her compete-game effort.

“We just couldn’t get the bats going and (North Polk) made some nice plays against us,” CMB coach Troy Houge said.

The Raiders (1-4, 1-2) return to the diamond at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they travel to Prairie City-Monroe to face the Mustangs.

CMB also hosts South Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

BASEBALL
North Polk 4, CMB 0, 5 innings

ALLEMAN — The Comets scored three runs early and a lights malfunction allowed the lead to stick Monday for the defending 2A state champions.

The Raiders struck out eight times against Blake Braver and CMB mustered only three hits in the loss.

Creighton Caple had two of three hits, while Hunter McWhirter also had a single.

Nate Bishop took the loss on the mound. He allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out one while walking five.

North Polk led 1-0 after one inning and then plated two more in the second. The game was called after five innings because the lights went out and wouldn’t come back on.

Brett Haun had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the winners, while Brean Heasey also had two hits and scored twice.

The Raiders drop to 1-2 on the season and 1-2 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Both CMB squads head to PCM on Wednesday. First pitch for both varsity games will be 7:30 p.m.
