Lynnville-Sully softball stays undefeated

ALLEMAN — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks experienced something Saturday for the first time this season — the Hawk softball team trailed an opponent.

North Polk’s Comets shot out to a 4-0 lead on the Hawks after two innings in the opening game of the North Polk tournament. The Class 1A eighth-ranked Hawks responded with three runs in the third inning and one in top of the fourth to tie the game up. The Comets pushed across a go-ahead run in their half of the fourth inning.

Down 5-4, Lynnville-Sully’s offense took off in the sixth and seventh innings. The Hawks plated five runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh on their way to a 12-6 win.

Lynnville-Sully connected for 17 hits in the game while North Polk had 12 hits off winning pitcher Madison Rasmusson. Rasmusson did not issue a walk and struck out 10 batters.

Rasmusson also went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and two base hits, driving in two runs. Shelby Davis was 3-for-5 with a single, a double and a home run with four RBIs. Kasiah Ehresman ripped out four singles in five at bats and stole two bases.

Lysandra James hit two singles and a double in four plate appearances for Lynnville-Sully. Lizzy Van Manen had a single and a double. Brenna Lanser singled, stole two bases and had an RBI. Maria Rasmusson singled.

Later Saturday, the Hawks avenged their only regular-season loss of 2014. They defeated Ballard 6-2, which was the final of last year’s contest but in the Bombers’ favor.

The teams were locked in a 2-2 battle from the first inning until the fourth. Lynnville-Sully scored four runs in the fourth and made the four-run lead hold up for the victory.

Rasmusson allowed two runs on 10 hits and two walks. She struck out two. Rasmusson singles, stole two bases and drove in run for the Hawk offense.

Lanser singled and doubled while Ehresman hit two singles. Davis, Lizzy Van Manen, Lysandra James and Bayli Van Manen each had a single.

Lynnville-Sully (5-0) goes to Keota Monday for a South Iowa Cedar League contest.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball and baseball teams were to have played Friday against English Valleys, but the games were rained out.
