County Veterans Affairs Director arrested for second OWI

The Jasper County Veterans Affairs Director was arrested for his second operating while under the influence charge Sunday after he was pulled over and blew more than twice the legal limit.

Christopher A. Chartier, 32, was previously arrested with an OWI in February 2013.

Newton police stopped Chartier for a moving violation on South Eighth Avenue East, according to a police report. Officers said Chartier gave several indicators of impairment, including failing two sobriety maneuvers and was unable to complete the third before registering a BAC of .201.

Chartier was taken to the Jasper County Jail where he posted a $2,000 bond the same day.

Jasper County Supervisor Denny Carpenter said he had not heard about the arrest but that the Veterans Affairs board would deal with any repercussions first. Attempts were made to contact members of the board but no response was immediately received.
