Mustangs struggle with cold, windy conditions

KNOXVILLE — The cold and windy conditions affected the Prairie City-Monroe girls golf team Monday.

All four Mustang golfers shot in the 100s and the team finished fifth in the six-team field. PCM’s 18-hole score was 506, which was 47 strokes better than Oskaloosa.

Pella won the meet with a 405 and host Knoxville was next with a 423. Grinnell was third with a 424 and Indianola was a distant fifth at 454. Oskaloosa shot a 553 in sixth.

“All the girls struggled with the cold, windy day,” PCM coach Val Edwards said.

Sophomore Breanna Maher finished in 17th overall with a 114. Sabrina Reed was the next Mustang at 127 and Ellie Steenhoek came in with a 129. Abby Van Haaften carded a 136.

“Breanna struggled with her drives in the first round and started to get things going on the second nine but just couldn’t fully get her game going today.

“Ellie, Sabrina and Abby all struggled with their short games and trying to read the greens and how to play against the strong wind.”

Medalist honors went to Knoxville’s Envy Wells, who shot a 96. Knoxville’s Sierra Findley and Indianola’s Maddie Berkley each shot a 98.

The Mustangs hit the road Thursday for an 18-hole tournament at the Chariton Invitational. They travel to Colfax-Mingo for the Tigerhawks’ tournament on Friday.
