Newton girls dominate Cardinal Relays

Newton girls track and field coach Rachel Tomas admitted Thursday that everything Grace Coen does from here on out is to build for what is expected to be a strong finish to the season.

There are high expectations for the junior and three wins at the Cardinal Relays put her on a the right path toward meeting those expectations.

Coen won the 400-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs to lead Newton to a dominating effort at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals won 10 events in all and had 19 top-three performances in winning the team title with 194 points.

Leela Spencer anchored the winning 4x100 relay team and grabbed the gold in the 100 meters, Morgann Eide anchored the winning shuttle hurdle relay team and won the 100 hurdles and Sarah Kalkhoff set a new Cardinal Relays record with a win in the discus.

Hailey Coy also won the 800 and Sydney Jenkins was victorious in the 200.

“We had an amazing night,” Tomas said. “We won every individual race on the track except the 400 hurdles. We had lots of girls step up tonight.”

The eight-team field also featured four other area schools. Collins-Maxwell/Baxter was second in the team race with 104 points, Prairie City-Monroe scored 93 points in third and Lynnville-Sully was fourth with 67.

North Mahaska (46) edged Colfax-Mingo (42) for fifth and Southeast Warren (25) and Pleasantville (17) rounded out the field.

CMB won three events on the night. Toni Spencer won the long jump, Payge Jurgens claimed first in the shot put and the foursome of Maddy Poage, Toni Spencer, MacKenzie Schmitz and Bridget Hurley were victorious in the sprint medley relay.

“Our girls competed well tonight,” CMB coach Jerry Meinerts said. “We used this meet to try to run some decent relay times to start to get ready for conference and regionals. We didn’t score as many points as we could have but it would have been tough to catch 4A Newton anyway.”

PCM triumphed in the 4x200 and 4x400 relay. Jayci Vos and Ashley Van Gorp were a part of both silver-medal performances. They teamed up with Emily Hugen and Mackenzie Clarke to win the 4x200 and Rachel Stafford and Rachel Peter joined them to win the 4x400.

“Tonight, we had girls doing some things they hadn’t done before, and they stepped up nicely,” PCM coach Bridget Martin said. “We are trying to make final decisions for conference and districts. The Cardinal Relays is always a fun meet to run in, but now we have to shift our focus to the two biggest meets of the year.”

Shelby Davis got the only win of the night for Lynnville-Sully, but the Hawks were second in two relays and Elizabeth Van Manen was runner-up in the discus. Davis won the high jump.

Colfax-Mingo got a win from its 4x800 relay team. That foursome included Ivy Moore, Kennedi Hostetter, Dakota Hostetter and Bailey Pease and they ran a season-best time of 10 minutes, 35.29 seconds.

“I was very proud of the girls and their efforts tonight,” Colfax-Mingo coach Zach Tomas said. “The time for the 4x800 was a 23-second season best since I have been coaching.”

Coen won the 400 in 1:01.70, the 1,500 in 4:57.08 and the 3,000 in 11:11.84. Leela Spencer won the 100 in 13.36 seconds, Jenkins won the 200 in 27.81 seconds and Coy won the 800 in 2:31.93.

Tessa Keeton helped the Cardinals go 1-2 in the 800. Eide and Alexis Stout went 1-2 in the 100 hurdles with times of 17.30 and 17.80, respectively, and Kalkhoff’s winning throw in the discus covered 130 feet, 11 inches. Kalkhoff also was second in the shot put.

Liz McVey, Alex Hutchinson, Kenna Winther and Leela Spencer won the 4x100 in 51.81 seconds and the foursome of Taylor Shipley, McVey, Fran Lucas and Eide won the shuttle hurdle in 1:11.70.

Toni Spencer’s win in the long jump was marked at 15-9.75 and Jurgens won the shot put with a toss of 35-11.5.

CMB’s sprint medley team didn’t only win gold. It also set a new school record in the process. Poage, Toni Spencer, Schmitz and Hurley finished in 1:53.44 and it bested a school record that had been in place for 17 years.

CMB’s Toni Spencer also was second in the 100 in 13.53 and the shuttle hurdle relay team of Sailor Hinegardner, Mary Schabillion, Brianda Bane and Sydney Zeisman was second in 1:14.21.

PCM’s Peter finished second to Coen in both the 1,500 and 3,000. The 4x100 team of Vos, Hugen, Van Gorp and Clarke were second in 52.04 and the distance medley relay team of Clarke. Hugen, Van Gorp and Stafford ended up second in 4:26.56.

Lynnville-Sully’s Davis won the high jump in 5-0 and Van Manen’s runner-up throw in the discus covered 110-10. The Hawks’ sprint medley and 4x800 relay teams were also second.

The 4x800 team included Mariah Vos, Cori Rice, Marissa Vos and Haley James and they finished in 11:03.11. The sprint medley foursome included Kasiah Ehresman, Rozendaal, Brenna Lanser and Madison Rasmussen and they ran a 1:55.32.

The best finish for Colfax-Mingo after the winning 4x800 relay win was Dakota Hostetter’s third-place tally in the 1,500 and the distance medley relay team of Kennedi Hostetter, Jessica Albright, Ries Wilson and Moore and they finished in 4:54.53.

Newton competes at Pella at 5 p.m. Monday. CMB, PCM and Colfax-Mingo all compete in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet at Saydel at 4 p.m. Monday. Lynnville-Sully doesn’t return to action until Thursday when it heads to BGM to take part in the state qualifying meet.
