Letting out a yell a few steps from the finish line, Newton High senior Christian Laube won his race in front of the home crowd on Senior Night at the 2015 Cardinal Relays.

Laube made his move to the front with 200 meters remaining in the 1,600-meter race, passing Collins-Maxwell/Baxter senior Mark Deutsch.

“I just figured out how to run my race my senior year after so long,” Laube said following his victory at H.A. Lynn Stadium Thursday night.

“I’ve been dropping time in this race the past few weeks. My idea going into it was to draft off him (Deutsch) then crank it up the last 200 meters.”

Laube said the Newton coaches had worked hard with him this season to help him improve his times.

“I was hoping that kick was enough for me and it turns out it was tonight. It feels great to win at home. I wanted to show our fans this senior’s still got some kick left.”

Laube is the 1,600 Cardinal Relays champion in 4 minutes, 45.84 seconds. Deutsch was second in 4:49.11. Deutsch won the other two distance races — 3,200 and 800 — to help CMB’s Raiders overpower the other seven teams competing and capture the 2015 Cardinal Relays team championship.

“I knew the guys I was going to have to run against in the 3,200. I just wanted to go out, set the pace early and see who wanted to go with me,” Deutsch said. “It was a good race and I was really in control out in front by myself.”

Deutsch claimed the 3,200 win with a time of 10:36.28. Prairie City-Monroe’s senior Maverick McAtee was second in 10:59.70 and junior Canyon Kuhlmann of Lynnville-Sully ran third in 11:12.02.

“I think the 3,200 caught up with me in the last 200 of this race (1,600), but I’m still happy with where I ran it. I have one more event tonight,” Deutsch said.

That event was the 800 meters in which in 2:05.53 with teammate sophomore Creighton Caple in third at 2:13.67. Laube finished third in 2:3.96.

CMB won nine events, scoring points in all 18 events. The Raiders rolled up 199 points with Newton in a distant second with 91 points. Newton won four events. Lynnville-Sully was third with 61 points followed by PCM with 59 and Colfax-Mingo with 50.

North Mahaska finished sixth with 43 points. Pleasantville scored 37 and Southeast Warren ended up with 18 points.

One new meet record was established Thursday. Newton’s own senior Deonne Harris went head-to-head with CMB’s Bryce Kemp for the third time this season in the 110-meter high hurdles. In a race with hurdles flying at the end, Harris made it three-for-three, winning in a new Cardinal Relays’ record time of 14.67 seconds and Kemp posting a time of 14.78 seconds.

“I knew I was going to have to run hard to keep him off me tonight,” Harris said. “Bryce is a great hurdler. I just had to get out strong and I felt him pressing me the whole time. I focused on my race, but we kept smacking hands as we ran next to each other.”

In the high hurdles’ race, PCM’s freshman Skyler Koder took third in 16.23 followed by Newton senior J.T. Thongvanh in 16.38 and CMB senior Joey Nissen in fifth at 16.76.

Harris later cruised to victory in the 400 hurdles in 56.30 seconds. CMB’s Kyle Cather, a senior, was second in 58.68 seconds. Harris anchored the Cardinals’ shuttle hurdle relay to a winning time of 1:01.37. CMB, PCM and Lynnville-Sully finished second, third and fourth.

“We started out running the relay in 1:06 or 1:07 and now we’re down to 1:01. We’re improving,” Harris said of the shuttle relay team, which includes Thongvanh.

Kemp led the Raiders with wins in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 11.66 seconds and 23.89 seconds. He won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6 inches with CMB junior Brady Stover taking third in the event at 18-10.

Lynnville-Sully junior Sage Ehresman took second in the 100 at 11.72 and Newton freshman Matthew Karsten was third in 11.75. Karsten finished second in the 200 in 24.34 seconds.

CMB’s senior duo of Clayton Weltha and Patrick Girard claimed championships in the discus and shot put, respectively. Weltha’s winning throw in the discus was 145 feet and he was fourth in the shot put. Girard won the shot put at 51-5 and was fifth in the discus.

The Raiders won the 4x100 relay race, edging PCM out —47.36 seconds to 47.39 seconds. Lynnville-Sully was third at 48.10. CMB’s 4x400 relay foursome beat Colfax-Mingo’s in a close race to close the meet — 3:37.11 to 3:38.88. CMB placed second in the 4x200 and the 4x800 relay races.

Colfax-Mingo’s juniors Jake Lietz and Gabe Simpson ran personal-best times to go 1-2 in the 400 meters. Lietz won the race in 52.05 seconds for his fifth straight win in the event his season. Simpson was second at 52.27.

Lietz and Simpson teamed up with juniors Colin Lourens and Jared Myers to win the 1,600 medley relay in a season’s-best time of 3:53.06. CMB was second in 3:54.01 and Lynnville-Sully took third in 4:00.96.

“We train a lot on 400s during the week. We have a thing called a gut-buster that really trains you for 400s,” Lietz said. “Unfortunately, Blake (Summy) hurt his hamstring in the long jump tonight and could run with us. We were hoping for a 1-2-3 finish, but 1-2 is great for us.”

Summy, a junior, finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-10 while Lourens was second at 19-9.75, which was a personal best for him.

PCM had one event champion at the Cardinal Relays. Koder won a tiebreaker with CMB junior Hunter Gunderson in the high jump. Both cleared the bar at 6-2. PCM freshmen Ricky Reeve and Tyler Dredge finished fifth and sixth in the long jump and senior Connor Warrick was sixth in the shot put.

Lynnville-Sully’s Sage Ehresman finished second in the discus, 140-3, and shot put, 48-0. Teammate Noah Engle, a junior, was third in the discus at 131-4.

Newton freshman Landon Hansen claimed fourth in the discus with a throw of 125-7. Cardinal senior Mason Bowes was fifth in the shot put at 43-2.
