Hawk girls are SICL track champions; boys finish third

BELLE PLAINE — Racking up six conference event championships and many more points, Lynnville-Sully’s girls captured the 2015 South Iowa Cedar League team title Tuesday at Belle Plaine.

The Hawk girls piled up 158 points and BGM was second with 115 points. Iowa Valley placed third with 112 points in the 11-team field.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys had a double champion in the field events and finished third as a team with 91.5 points. Belle Plaine won the boys’ team championship with 136 points and Montezuma was second with 121.

Madison Rasmusson won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 39.58 seconds with teammate Cori Rice in fourth place at 2:45.57. Marissa Vos claimed the conference title in the 3,000 meters in 12:22.91 and Haley James was third in 13:40.16.

The foursome of Kasiah Ehresman, Jataya Meyer, Makenzy Rozendaal and Brenna Lanser captured not one but two relay championships. They ran a winning 53.73 seconds in the 4x100 and combined for a 1:54.32 clocking in the 4x200.

Ehresman combined with Mariah Vos, Rice and Rasmusson to win the 4x800 relay race in 10:41.40. Those four combined again to place third in the 4x400 relay race in 4:30.96.

The Hawk girls went 1-2 in the discus. Shelby Davis was the girls’ discus champion with a throw of 118 feet, 6 inches and Lizzy Van Manen was second at 102-6. Davis finished second in the shot put with a toss of 31-11.5 and teammate Jelissa Rozendaal was third at 30-4.

Speaking of field events, Lynnville-Sully’s Sage Ehresman is the SICL boys’ discus and shot put champion. He won the discus with a throw of 136-2 and took the top place in the shot put with a toss of 46-4.5. Noah Engle placed third in the discus at 122-9 and Blake Wehrle was sixth in the shot put at 39-11.75.

“I’m proud to say 2015 SICL Conference Champions. I like the sound of that and I’m so excited for the girls and proud of the efforts from each one of them tonight,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach. “Winning a conference championship as a team was a goal many of them identified early in the season.

“They’ve worked hard throughout the season to accomplish that goal tonight. They battled some really strong competition along with wet conditions and a weather delay, but competed and supported each other as a team to come out on top.”

For the Hawk girls, Lanser took second in the 200 meters in 28.02 seconds and Makenzy Rozendaal was ninth in 29.65 seconds. Lanser placed third in the 100 in 13.40 seconds and Makenzy Rozendaal was eighth in 14.23.

Rasmusson ran third in the 400 meters in 1:05.19 and Kristine Jaennette was 12th in 1:22.20. Marissa Vos placed third in the 1,500 in 5:57.17 and Haley James was fifth in 6:11.87.

Davis placed second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6. In the long jump, Hailey Scandridge was eighth with a leap of 12-9.75 and Olivia Ritter was 11th at 11-6.25.

In the 100 high hurdles, Mariah Vos placed sixth in 18.09 seconds and Shelby Foster was 12th in 20.28. Van Manen took fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:15.34 and Mariah Vos was 10th in 1:18.15. Foster, Scandridge, Meyer and Camryn Russell combined for fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:22.75.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls were fourth in the distance medley relay. Russell, Van Manen Tierney Needham and Rice had a time of 4:58.47. Needham, Russell, Skyler Young and Alexis Hardenbrook combined for seventh in the sprint medley relay race in 2:15.69.

The Hawk boys had four third-place finishes in events besides the discus at the conference meet.

Colton Arment finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.25 seconds and Ryan Hofer was fifth in 18.29. Arment and Hofer joined up with Noah Engle and Caden Dunsbergen to place third in the shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:05.77. Engle was sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.71 and Hofer was 16th in 1:13.32.

Sage Ehresman was third in the 100-meter dash in 11.56 seconds and Trevor Squires placed 17th in 13.51. He combined with Engle, Corey McCoy and Noah Zylstra to take third in the 4x100 relay race in 46.92 seconds.

McCoy placed fourth in the 400 meters in 55.64 seconds and David Bastuck was seventh in 56.88. Bastuck, McCoy, Canyon Kuhlmann and Carson Dunsbergen combined for fifth in the 4x400 relay in 3:52.62.

Kuhlmann finished fifth in the 800 meters in 2:16.29 and Jake Brand was 17th in 2:39.29. Kuhlmann was sixth in the 3,200 in 11:25.91 and Cody Gibbs was eighth in 11:54.44. Kuhlmann ran seventh in 1,600 in 5:18.52 and Kemper Lukehart placed 17th in 6:14.82.

The Hawks’ distance medley relay team of Caden Dunsbergen, Arment, Bastuck and Carson Dunsbergen was fifth in 4:15.74. The 4x200 relay team of Caden Dunsbergen, Karl Recknagel, Noah Zylstra and Sage Zylstra ran seventh in 1:43.66.

Carson Dunsbergen, Recknagel, Elijah Collins and Luke Jones combined for sixth in the 4x800 relay race in 9:50.07. Jesse Van Wyk was 16th in the 200 meters in 28.12 seconds and Connor Fraker was 19th in 34.54.

Carson Dunsbergen tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-6. Johnson was 13th in the long jump with a leap of 15-11.5 and Drake Ehresman was 15th in 14-6.

The Lynnville-Sully teams compete in Thursday’s Cardinal Relays at Newton. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. at Newton’s H.A. Lynn Stadium.
