Newton girls fall to Boone on the courts

BOONE — Newton High’s girls came up short in their rescheduled tennis dual against host Boone Thursday. Boone swept the singles matches on its way to a 10-1 win over Newton.

Newton’s lone victory came in the No. 5 doubles match. Elizabeth Myers and Brenda Becerra claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over Paige Dighton and Grier Aspengren.

McKenna Heisdorffer dropped a three-set tiebreaker decision at No. 1 singles. Breanna Sterenburg rallied to beat Heisdorffer, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.

Boone’s Emma Rose beat Megan Pressgrove, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles and Morganne Borsh handed Newton’s Sierra Griffith a 6-1, 6-0 setback at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Boone’s Sarah Statz defeated Marisa Modlin, 6-2, 6-2.

Boone’s Carlie Romig beat Newton’s Kate Wyre , 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match. Newton’s Katherine Thorpe dropped a 7-5, 7-6(2) decision to Joey Cornelis at No. 6 singles.

Sterenburg and Rose took the No. 1 doubles match, 6-3, 6-2, over Heisdorffer and Pressgrove. Borsh and Statz beat Newton’s Modlin and Madison Humphrey, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.

Romig and Cornelis beat Newton’s Griffith and Wyre with a third-set tiebreaker, 6-0, 3-6, 10-3, in the No. 3 doubles match. Newton’s Thorpe and Melanie Stice lost 6-1, 7-5 to Bridget Good and Grace Krafcisin.

In junior varsity doubles play, Newton lost seven matches to Boone.

Bethany Baumgartner and Natalie Camp lost to Cornelis and Caruth 8-2; Arianna Jamieson and Ali Bestell lost 6-1 to Gorden and Roberts; Stacie Sanger and Isabella Leach lost 6-2 to Brannan and Ward; Kinzie Loree and GiGi Chen lost 6-1 to Smith and Fuentes; Rylie Bakalar and Morgan Modlin lost 6-1 to Wieberts and Burke; Hayley Sinclair and Haley Walton lost 6-1 to Low and Allen; Maddie Gooding-Hunt and Echo Downs lost 6-2 to Kelly and Crim.

Newton plays at Saydel Monday.
