Cardinal girl golfers claim dual at Iowa City

IOWA CITY — Playing an 18-hole dual golf meet, Newton High’s Cardinal girls came out with a victory over host Iowa City High’s Little Hawks Monday.

The Cardinals combined for a team 390 on the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City. The Little Hawks finished at 397.

“I’m proud of how the girls played on a difficult and unfamiliar golf course today,” said Scott Enyart, Newton head coach. “They navigated around the course well. The course has a lot of water hazards on it. Our girls did a really good job of playing it today.”

Jessica Reynolds shot rounds of 44 and 46 for a team-leading score of 90. She was the runner-up medalist behind Iowa City’s Sarah Overton, who shot an 82 (41-41), as the meet medalist.

Cydney Hillyard carded a 96 on rounds of 46 and 50 for the Cardinals. Shelbey Cochran (53-49) and Abby Jolivette (52-50) finished at 102.

Emily Fitzgerald came in at 103 (53-50) and Olivia Maharry shot a 112 (56-56).

“Jessica had a birdie on No. 5 on the front nine, which was a par-4 hole. She had several 3-putts today that she’d like to get rid of,” Enyart said. “Her ball striking was solid, especially on her tee shots.”

Enyart said Hillyard struggled a bit at times, but scrambled back with some nice recovery shots. He said her iron play was pretty good for the day.

“Shelbey had a rough start, but one thing about her, she’s a grinder. She sticks with it,” he said. “Shelbey had a birdie on No. 15, a par-5 hole. She was on the green in two and had two putts to get the birdie.”

Jolivette and Fitzgerald keep getting more consistent with their play, Enyart said. He said Jolivette had solid tee shots while Fitzgerald putted better.

“Neither one had a lot of those big number holes, which helps bring down the scores. Olivia had back-to-back pars on No. 7 and No. 8,” Enyart said.

Newton travels to Pella for a nine-hole triangular meet Tuesday. The Cardinals take on Winterset and Pella. The head-to-head with Pella is Little Hawkeye Conference action.
