Newton girls notch three match victories at Osky

OSKALOOSA — McKenna Heisdorffer and Megan Pressgrove had to work a bit of overtime to earn a victory Tuesday as Newton High’s No. 1 doubles team.

The Cardinal duo overcame a first-set loss, won two straight tiebreakers to defeat Oskaloosa’s Jamie Stewart and Mary Yarkosky. Heisdorffer and Pressgrove racked up a 1-6, 7-6 (4), 15-13 win.

“McKenna played great today. She was so clutch for us, winning two third-set tiebreakers,” said Erick Zehr, Newton head coach. “There were lots of close matches again.”

It was one of just three victories the Cardinals put up against host Oskaloosa in the Little Hawkeye Conference tennis dual. The Indians won the meet, 8-3.

The teams battled wind, cold and spitting rain, same as Newton did Monday playing at Grinnell.

“Osky plays a certain style of tennis, where they “chip and charge” and wind like this really benefits teams that play that way,” Zehr said. “Again, our girls struggled to play in the conditions, and it wasn’t until late in the doubles matches that we finally started to look comfortable and like we could impact the match. The rest of the day Osky was in control.”

Heisdorffer set the tone for winning with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-3, 10-4 win over Stewart in the No. 1 singles contest. Kate Wyre posted a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory against Emileigh Klucas at No. 5 singles.

Zehr said Wyre played well in her matches, handling the wind. Wyre and Madison Humphrey were Newton’s No. 3 doubles team, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Klucas and Claire Carmichael.

Oskaloosa’s Bethany Rowley beat Sierra Griffith 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Pressgrove lost 6-2, 7-5 to Oskaloosa’s Asli Bayram at No. 3 singles.

Yarkosky defeated Newton’s Marissa Modlin 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and in the No. 6 singles match, Oskaloosa’s Macy Scharff beat Katherine Thorpe 6-0, 6-3.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Rowley and Bayram beat Newton’s Griffith and Modlin 6-0, 4-6, 10-3.

Macy Millege and Brooke Caves defeated Newton’s Thorpe and Melanie Stice, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 doubles. Scharff and Saydee Smith defeated Newton’s Elizabeth Myers and Brenda Becerra 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Newton’s junior varsity posted five wins in 12 matches.

Kinzie Loree and Natalie Camp beat Kain and Bunnell, 4-3; Lorree and Camp lost 4-3 to Chapman and West; Jordyn Soule and Bethany Baumgartner won 5-2 over Lanphie and McKay and lost 4-3 to Iverson and Chapman; Ali Bestell and Rylie Bakalar won 4-3 over Havlickova and Gatton and lost 5-2 to Briggs and Doll.

Maddie Gooding-Hunt and Stacie Sanger beat Mullen and Seibert 4-3 and lost 5-2 to Jones and Glasgow; Isabella Leach and GiGi Chen defeated Orndoff and Green 4-3 and lost 7-0 to Watters and Menninga; Hayley Sinclair and Morgan Modlin lost 6-1 to Miller and Iverson; Haley Walton and Enco Downs lost 5-2 to Schual and VanDen Ber.

Newton is at Norwalk Monday in Little Hawkeye Conference play.
