Field events push Hawk girls to meet championship

MONTEZUMA — Lynnville-Sully’s girls captured first and second in both throwing events in the Class B division of Montezuma’s Lew Lundy Relays Tuesday. That put them on the path to winning the Class B championship.

The Hawk girls piled up 175 points for the team title with host Montezuma in second at 125 points. There were seven teams competing in the Class B division.

“Tonight’s meet wasn’t just a competition against the other teams in our class, but also against the elements as strong winds and cooler temperatures were again a factor,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully head coach.

“Just like at the Eddyville meet, it was going to come down to our mindset and preparation for our events. The experience and success the girls had at Eddyville I believed helped them for tonight and any other bad weather meets the rest of the season.”

Lizzy Van Manen continues to collect gold medals in the discus. She won Tuesday with a throw of 103 feet, 7 inches with teammate Lysandra James in second at 76-11.

Shelby Davis is having a strong season in the shot put ring, winning with a toss of 34-7.25. Jelissa Rozendaal was second at 28-10.

In the long jump, Hailey Scandridge placed sixth at 14-0.5 and Olivia Ritter was seventh at 11-9.5.

The only title on the track for the Hawks came in the 4x800-meter relay. Cori Rice, Madison Rasmusson, Mariah Vos and Kasiah Ehresman combined for a winning time of 11 minutes, 1.74 seconds.

Rasmusson took second in the 200 meters in 29.15 seconds and Skyler Young was sixth in 32.68. Rasmusson placed second in the 400, running 1:05.10, and Kristine Jaennette placed fifth in 1:19.73.

Taking third in the 4x400 was the team of Alexis Hardenbrook, Haley James, Ritter and Van Manen in 4:59.53. The distance medley relay team of Madison Johnson, Tierney Neeeham, Van Manen and Rice placed third in 5:04.55.

Scandridge, Meyer, Shelby Foster and Russell turned in a second-place time of 1:21.85 in the shuttle hurdle relay race. Scandridge placed fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 19.86 seconds and Foster was eighth in 21.19.
